Beaconsfield Medical Centre: ‘Excellent’ in Sustainability

McCann & Partners appointed by developers (Assura Plc.) to undertake a BREEAM Assessment in line with the Department of Health requirements

We spoke to Michael Davey, Associate Director, of McCann & Partners to discuss the sustainability of the new Beaconsfield Medical Centre.

  • What is BREEAM?

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is the world’s first sustainability rating scheme for the built environment. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and describes a building’s environmental performance.

  • What categories does a BREEAM Assessment focus on?

The standard focuses on sustainable value in;

  1. Management
  2. Health and Wellbeing
  3. Energy
  4. Water
  5. Transport
  6. Materials
  7. Waste
  8. Land Use and Ecology
  9. Pollution

Each category focusses on the most influential factors, including reduced carbon emissions, low impact design, adaptation to climate change, and ecological value and biodiversity protection.

  • How is a development rated using BREEAM Assessment?

Developments are rated and certified on a scale of;

– Unclassified = <30%
– Pass = >30%
– Good = >45%
– Very Good = >55%
– Excellent =>70%
– Outstanding = >85%

  • What BREEAM rating will the Beaconsfield Medical Centre achieve?

This scheme is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ score – right up there with the top performing buildings in the country (and around the world for that matter)
